When the Garden Keeps Moving

The nursery never stays the same for long, and April makes that especially clear.

The intensity of summer growth begins to ease and the light softens as the garden settles into a new rhythm. It is a moment where we step back and take stock of what has thrived, what needs attention, and what the season is asking of us next.

This time of year often reveals just how resilient the garden really is. Plants continue to grow, flower, and respond to changing conditions with very little prompting. Even where things look a little untidy, there is usually abundance underneath it all, with strong plants, healthy structure, and plenty of life carrying on in its own direction.

Our focus now is on refining rather than reacting. Clearing spent growth, lifting out anything that has finished its cycle, and working carefully through the nursery at a steady pace. Cutting back at the base and removing material cleanly helps keep things tidy without disturbing what is still performing well.

Autumn is also an important window for preparation. With temperatures easing and conditions becoming more stable, it is an ideal time for propagation and establishing new plants. We are continuing work in our greenhouse as we refine airflow and misting systems, preparing it for the busier spring season ahead.

This period also gives us space to review our perennial range. Some varieties are trialed further, some are rested, and others are reintroduced depending on performance and demand. We continue to work closely with landscapers, designers, and gardeners who are looking for reliable and interesting plants for both private and public spaces.

As we move deeper into autumn, the garden begins to slow but it does not stop. It simply shifts, readying itself and us for the next season of growth.
