Also known as azure blue sage, this stunning perennial produces a sea of dreamy powder sky blue flowers that always get gasps when we have visitors to the garden flowering from late spring peaking in late autumn.
Easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils, Salvia azurea once established whilst it is relatively drought tolerant, it certainly appreciates water which will help with flowering, we always mulch to retain moisture. Happiest in full sun although a bit of light shade will be fine. The flowers form on lax stems that will fall forward if planted to the front of your border as we have done which you can see in the photo or the stems will be supported more if plant mid border amongst other plants. However, stems can be cut back by half in spring to promote a more compact plant and prevent the stems from flopping. Plants may repeat bloom from summer to autumn but will need regular moisture to encourage this. Remove spent flower spikes to help extend the bloom period, but cut plants back after flowering has concluded. attractive to butterflies.
