Chrysanthemum Diablo has wonderful large white blooms with incurving petals.
For this variety, cut back once in November or thereabouts to give a bushier plant and to promote flowering in autumn time, this helps the blooms grow 'true to colour' without getting bleached out by the summer sun.
As the flower buds form, if you are just wanting single quite large flowers then these should be "disbudded" which is removing all the little flower buds that form around the central flower bud. The plant will then put all its energy into that single flower bud on each stem. If you choose to grow Diablo in this way, then the flower size will be around 12-14cm in diameter if grown as a single bloom per stem. Many people just let them flower and that is absolutely fine too, but the flowers will be smaller which is what you may prefer. You may wish to stake this variety so support the stems as they grow.
In the autumn garden, Chrysanthemums are a star performer that bloom prolifically long after other plants have called it quits for the season. A native of China and prized for over 2,000 years, the name “chrysanthemum” comes from the Greek words for gold (chrysos) and flower (anthos).
After flowering, some gardeners cut them back to about 10cm tall and cover with a light, airy mulch or straw. This is not actually necessary but can tidy the plants up. Chrysanthemums can also be easily divided.
A fabulous cut flower that lasts so well in a vase, often for more than two weeks. Pick them when they two thirds to three-quarters open, be sure to strip all of the leaves off so they do not sit under the water line.
